Media Release (update)

Big Island police have arrested a Kona man in connection with a theft from a commercial boat on Wednesday (June 2).

After asking for the public’s help for information about the case, officers from the Kona Patrol Section responded to several reports from the community Thursday (June 3) that a man was seen in White Sands Beach Park and the Banyans Surf area off Ali’i Drive with a yellow oversized surfboard that may have been stolen from the commercial boat while it was moored at Kailua Bay.

Responding officers located the man and recovered the stolen surfboard, valued at $500. Zackariah Weimer, 24, of Kailua-Kona was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft.

On Friday (June 4) detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section charged Weimer with the offense. He is being held at the Kona Cellblock in lieu of $2,000 bail.

Additional stolen items from the commercial boat, including digital underwater cameras and "reef friendly" lip balm and sun screen, have not been recovered.

Police commend community members for their diligence in reporting their observations to police and ask that anyone with additional information about this case or the stolen items call Detective Myra Iwamoto at 326-4646, extension 281, or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
