MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department’s 21 community policing officers offered their thanks to residents taking part in the 165 Neighborhood Watch groups on the Big Island.

“We want to express our appreciation to everyone who has participated in the Neighborhood Watch Program,” said Sergeant James Sanborn, head of community policing in East Hawaii.

“Their dedication and time they’ve spent toward making their communities safer have made a difference.”

Sanborn attributed the decline in both property and violent crimes, as well as the Department’s high criminal clearance rate, at least partially to the participation of Neighborhood Watch groups.

The philosophy of community policing is based on a partnership between community police officers and the communities they serve, he said.

“We in community policing have been gratified by the involvement of our residents in the fight against crime and in efforts to make our communities safe,” he said.

“To all who have gotten involved, we offer our heartfelt appreciation and wish all a happy and safe holiday.”
