Puna man charged with attempted murder 11-11-05

A 21-year-old man from Hawaiian Beaches was charged with various offenses in connection with a shooting incident that occurred early Friday morning (November 11, 2005) near a gas station in the upper Hilo area.

On November 11, 2005, at about 2:08 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to a call of reported gunshots in the vicinity of a gas station on Kaumana Drive, near Ainako Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were unable to locate anyone at the scene, however, were able to determine that the gas station facility sustained damages resulting from gunshots.

Police were also able to determine that the incident involved a lone gunman shooting at an 18-year-old Hilo man and a 21-year-old Hilo man. Neither the victims, nor anyone else, were injured during this shooting incident. It was also learned that the suspect left the scene in a white Dodge van prior to police arrival.

Shortly after receiving this information, patrol officers located and stopped the described vehicle on Mohouli Street Extension. The 21-year-old suspect, who was the driver and lone occupant, was arrested for 2 counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and 1 count of Place to Keep A Firearm. East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives responded to continue the investigation.

On Friday evening (November 11, 2005), detectives charged Josiah Keikaikapono Miller with two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, one count of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, one count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Separate Felony, one count of Place to Keep a Firearm, and one count Criminal Property Damage in the First Degree. Detectives also recovered a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition suspected of being the weapon used in the shooting.

Miller is being held in the Hilo Police cellblock in lieu of $99,000.00 bail.
