Rina L. Shimizu
…charged with assault on a police officer and other offenses

Media Release (update)

East Hawaii detectives charged a 27-year-old Puna woman with various offenses in connection with an incident early Thursday evening (May 1) in the Puna subdivision of Hawaiian Beaches. Saturday evening (May 3), Rina L. Shimizu was charged with first-degree assault on a police officer, second-degree reckless endangering, two counts of third-degree promoting of a dangerous drug and two counts of prohibited acts relating to drug paraphernalia.

A second suspect, 30 year-old Peleaulani Mahi was released pending further investigation.

The incident began around 7:25 p.m. Thursday when detectives with the department’s Vice Section attempted to serve a search warrant on a car at the intersection of Kahakai Boulevard and Moano Street in Hawaiian Beaches. It was reported that the car, with two occupants, accelerated rapidly toward one of the officers present. Officers fired at the car, striking it several times. The occupants were not struck by any bullets. One of the officers was injured when the car fled the scene.

The car was later found abandoned in another area of the subdivision. Shortly thereafter, Shimizu was located nearby and was arrested for attempted first-degree murder. Subsequent investigation indicated that the other charges were more appropriate.

Mahi was arrested without incident at 10:20 a.m. Friday for promoting a dangerous drug.

Shimizu is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $10,500 bail pending her initial court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon in South Hilo District Court.
