A 33-year-old man died Saturday (September 4, 2004) in an apparent drowning in the waters off Pohoiki Bay in Puna.

The victim was identified as Justin Brown, of a Leilani Estates subdivision address.

Responding to a 9:30 a.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that the victim had been seen paddling his surfboard with diving equipment with him off Pohoiki Bay about 4 a.m. Saturday.

About 6:30 a.m., surfers in the area saw his surfboard in the bay and found his body about 9:30 a.m.

Police have classified the incident as a coroner’s inquest and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
