MEDIA RELEASE

A 37-year-old man died Friday (February 25, 2005) of injuries he suffered in a motor vehicle-bicycle crash at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Route 11) and Malulani Street in North Kona.

The victim was identified as Randy L. Caddell, of a Kailua-Kona address.

Responding to a 4:27 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a racing type wheelchair-bicycle north on Queen Kaahumanu when he was struck by a 2003 Mazda MPVH driven by a 37-year-old Kailua-Kona woman who was making a left turn onto Malulani Street.

The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he later died at 7:08 p.m.

Alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Sharlotte Bird of the TEU at 326-4646, Ext. 229, or the Hilo TEU office at 961-8889.

Friday’s death was the eighth traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven at the same time last year.
