MEDIA RELEASE

An 80-year-old man was discovered floating face down in waters off Holoholo Kai Beach Sunday (December 31, 2006).

Responding to an 11:35 a.m. call, police officers learned that a surfer and some swimmers in the area had observed the man unresponsive in the water and pulled him to shore.

Hawaii Fire Department personnel were summoned but were unable to revive the man. He was pronounced dead at 12 p.m.

He has been identified as John S. Perkins of Palo Alto, California.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death. Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest.
