Acting on complaints by local businesses in the Hilo Industrial Area, community police officers arrested two persons for breaking into soda machines and stealing the currency dispensing devices inside.

After staking out several businesses in the area, community police officers arrested a 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman Tuesday (March 16, 2004) as they were allegedly breaking into a soda machine.

Arrested for attempted theft were Jerry Allen Fernandez and Jennifer Punani Nerpio, both of a Kaumana Drive address. Fernandez was also arrested for criminal property damage and for being in possession of burglary tools.

The two were released pending further investigation.

With the arrests, the police officers cleared a total of 40 cases — 29 for criminal property damage, 18 for theft, two for attempted theft and one for possession of burglary tools.
