MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of January 10-16, 2005, Big Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 31 DUI arrests, compared to 50 during the same period last year, a decrease of 38 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 91 major accidents so far this year, compared to 101 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.9 percent.

There have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
