MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of January 29-February 4, 2001, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 100 DUI arrests, a 30 percent decrease from the 143 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 206 major accidents so far this year, compared to 219 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.
