During the week of February 14-20, 2000, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 194 DUI arrests, a 46 percent increase over the 133 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 43 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 303, compared to 287 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There have been three traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 200 percent.

Two of this year’s three traffic fatalities, or 67 percent, have been alcohol-related.
