During the week of March 25-31, 2002, Big Island police arrested 10 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 201 DUI arrests, a 2 percent decrease from the 205 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 531 major accidents so far this year, compared to 571 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

There have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 175 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 200 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
