MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of April 10-16, 2000, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. None of the drivers was arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents; two of the drivers arrested were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 367 DUI arrests, a 7 percent decrease from the 393 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 41 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 632, compared to 627 during the same period last year, an increase of less than 1 percent.

There have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to three during the same period last year, an increase of 200 percent.

Two of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 22 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
