During the week of May 1-7, 2000, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 422 DUI arrests, an 11 percent decrease from the 474 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 36 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 750, compared to 743 during the same period last year, an increase of nearly 1 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 150 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 40 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
