MEDIA RELEASE

Ten persons were arrested for a total of 18 offenses over the weekend in a crackdown on drinking in parks and other public places in Hilo.

A special crime reduction unit comprised of Juvenile Aid and Community Policing officers arrested the 10, including one juvenile, on 10 counts of illegally drinking in a public place and on eight counts of drinking under the age of 21.

Officers assigned to the crime reduction unit made the arrests on Friday and Saturday (May 5 and 6, 2000) during a sweep of the Banyan Drive, Reeds Bay, Honolii, Puhi Bay and Edith Kanakaole Stadium areas.

The sweep was part of an ongoing operation conducted to keep public places safe for the public to enjoy.

It is also part of a two-month nationwide campaign to enforce zero tolerance laws prohibiting underage drinking.

Police are reminding residents that drinking in public places is illegal and that persons under the age of 21 may not purchase or possess alcoholic beverages in any public place.
