During the week of May 22-29, 2000, Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 499 DUI arrests, a 7 percent decrease from the 534 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 43 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 869, compared to 882 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.
There have been 10 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 43 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 40 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
