During the week of June 12-18, 2000, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was arrested for DUI after being involved in a traffic accident, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 568 DUI arrests, a 9 percent decrease from the 626 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 41 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 988, compared to 997 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.9 percent.
There have been 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 80 percent.
Four of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 22 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related.
