MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives have charged Jesus Reyes Jr., 71, of Kailua-Kona, with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Kenneth Kaniho Jr.

At 8:30 p.m. Sunday (June 18, 2000), Reyes was also charged with unlawful use of a firearm in commission of a felony and with having an illegal place to keep a firearm. Both are felony charges.

Reyes is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $175,000 bail.

Preliminary autopsy results determined that Kaniho died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The 41-year-old Kailua-Kona victim was shot to death shortly before noon Saturday at his workplace, Pacific Waste Inc., in the Kailua Industrial Area

At 12:23 p.m., Reyes turned himself in at the Kona police station.
