During the week of July 17-23, 2000, Big Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and seven were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 686 DUI arrests, a 4 percent decrease from the 714 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 51 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,211, compared to 1,198 during the same period last year, an increase of 1 percent.

There have been 23 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 44 percent.

Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 22 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one, or 4 percent, has been confirmed as being drug-related.
