The Akaka Falls Inn in Honomu was destroyed by fire Sunday (July 23, 2000).

Responding to a 9:30 a.m. call, firefighters extinguished the blaze by 11:05 a.m.

Two persons were injured slightly. One of the residents at the inn, an unidentified male, 45, suffered from minor burns and was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released. South Hilo Patrol Officer Joseph Botelho was helping a neighbor from his house next door when he, too, suffered minor burns.

There was no immediate estimate of damages to the structure or its contents, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation by Fire Department investigators.
