During the week of August 13-19, 2001, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers arrested were involved in traffic collisions, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 500 DUI arrests, a 37 percent decrease from the 798 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,427 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,369 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 during the same period last year, a decrease of 23 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
