A 42-year-old man apparently drowned Wednesday (August 22, 2001) in Kailua Bay.

The victim was identified as John Center, of a Holualoa address.

Police and fire units responded to a 9:57 a.m. report of a body floating in the water.

Police determined that bystanders brought the victim’s body to shore and performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on him until they were relieved by fire rescue personnel.

The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:43 a.m.

Police have classified the case as a public accident and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
