MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of August 21-27, 2000, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 812 DUI arrests, an increase of 2 percent over the 794 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 43 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,417, compared to 1,402 during the same period last year, an increase of 1 percent.

There have been 26 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 during the same period last year, an increase of 30 percent.

Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 19 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
