During the week of September 4-11, 2000, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 849 DUI arrests, an increase of 0.83 percent over the 842 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 44 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,508, compared to 1,485 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.
There have been 27 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 22 during the same period last year, an increase of 23 percent.
Five of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 19 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
