A two-story house and a pickup truck parked next to it were destroyed by fire Sunday (September 10, 2000) in the Fern Acres subdivision of Puna.

Responding to an 11:37 a.m. call, the Hawaiian Acres and Fern Acres Volunteer Fire units were the first on the scene and found the Hibiscus Street home engulfed in flames.

No one was in the residence, which was being rented by a Sandra Isom. The landlord, Patrick Braden, and neighbors reported the fire and were unsuccessful in putting it out.

The fire totally destroyed the residence and also burned a 1989 Mazda pickup truck parked next to it.

Fire investigators will try to determine the cause of the fire, reported to have started on the ground floor near the washer and dryer. Police estimated that the blaze caused $45,000 to the house and its contents and $1,000 to the Mazda truck.
