During the week of September 16-22, 2002, Big Island police arrested 15 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 618 DUI arrests, compared to 590 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been 1,617 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,651 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

There have been 19 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 10 during the same period last year, a decrease of 70 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
