MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A 37-year-old female escapee and her 35-year-old male companion were arrested Thursday (September 26, 2002).

The escapee, identified as Holly Okelani Kanakamaikai, was arrested at 12:35 p.m. at a Kaieie Road Address in Papaikou, South Hilo. She was charged with escape and is being held in the Hilo police cellblock with no bail.

Her companion, identified as John Davis, of no permanent address, was arrested for hindering prosecution. He is also being held in the police cellblock pending further investigation.

On September 5, 2002, Kanakamaikai escaped from sheriff’s deputies after being transported from the Hilo courthouse to the Hawaii Community Correctional Center. As a sheriff’s deputy was helping Kanakamaikai out of a van parked at the HCCC facility, the woman fled in handcuffs.

Police immediately distributed a news release with the escapee’s photograph and asked the public for assistance in finding her.

Lieutenant Henry Tavares, head of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section, said the police department received numerous phone calls and Crime Stoppers tips from the public with information about Kanakamaikai’s whereabouts.

“The police department really appreciates the help we received from Big Island residents in helping us find and arrest the escapee,” Tavares said.
