MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of September 30-October 7, 2002, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 652 DUI arrests, compared to 617 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.

There have been 1,697 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,735 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

There have been 19 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 73 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
