MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of October 2-8, 2000, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 916 DUI arrests, a decrease of 1 percent from the 927 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 36 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,671, compared to 1,639 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 24 during the same period last year, an increase of 25 percent.

Seven of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 23 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
