During the week of October 8-14, 2001, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 631 DUI arrests, a 32 percent decrease from the 924 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,781 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,707 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 21 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
