During the week of October 14-21, 2002, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 693 DUI arrests, compared to 643 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 1,794 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,813 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.

There have been 19 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 73 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
