During the week of October 20-26, 2003, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. One driver was involved in traffic collision, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 839 DUI arrests, compared to 719 during the same period last year, an increase of 17 percent.

There have been 1,897 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,840 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 29 fatalities so far this year, compared to 21 for the same period last year, an increase of 38 percent.

There have been four fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to seven at this time last year. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
