During the week of November 11-17, 2002, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 762 DUI arrests, compared to 714 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There have been 1,972 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,991 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.

There have been 26 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 25 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is nine, compared to 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
