During the week of November 20-26, 2000, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,008 DUI arrests, a decrease of 7 percent from the 1,084 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 41 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,979, compared to 1,941 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been 33 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 during the same period last year, an increase of 18 percent.

Ten of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 30 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and three have been confirmed as being drug-related.
