MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 6, 2007 – March 12, 2007, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and five were under the age of 21.

There have been 255 DUI arrests so far this year compared with 208 at this time last year, an increase of 23 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 452 major accidents so far this year compared with 511 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12 percent.

There have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with eight during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
