During the week of February 22-28, 1999, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 157 DUI arrests, a 9 percent decrease from the 172 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 33 major accidents during the week. They bring the total of major accidents so far this year to 325, compared to 344 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to six fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 83 percent.

There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to two at the same time last year.
