MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of March 16-21, 1999, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 277 DUI arrests, a 32-percent increase over the 210 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 43 major accidents during the week. They bring the total of major accidents so far this year to 459, compared to 484 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been three traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to eight fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 63 percent.

There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to three at the same time last year.
