During the week of March 28-April 3, 2006, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a total of 295 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 242 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 663 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 621 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There has been a total of 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 11 for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
