MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of May 3-9, 1999, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 482 DUI arrests, a 39 percent increase over the 348 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 49 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 761, compared to 802 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been five traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 14 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 64 percent.

There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to five at the same time last year.
