MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of June 28-July 5, 1999, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. None of the drivers was arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 665 DUI arrests, a 37 percent increase over the 485 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 44 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,095, compared to 1,171 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 26 percent.

Four of the fatalities have been alcohol-related, compared to nine at the same time last year, a decrease of 56 percent.
