MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July 5-11, 1999, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. None of the drivers was arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 681 DUI arrests, a 37 percent increase over the 498 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 35 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,130, compared to 1,207 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.

Four of the fatalities have been alcohol-related, compared to 10 at the same time last year, a decrease of 60 percent. One of the four alcohol-related fatalities was also drug-related.
