During the week of August 18, 2009, through August 24, 2009, Big Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Four of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 883 DUI arrests compared with 895 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,020 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,170 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.8 percent.

So far this year, there were 13 (one fatality reclassified) traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 16 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.8 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
