During the week of August 30-September 5, 1999, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was arrested for DUI after being involved in a traffic accident.
So far this year, there have been 825 DUI arrests, an 18 percent increase over the 697 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 50 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,463, compared to 1,537 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.
There have been 21 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 19 percent.
Four of the fatalities this year have been alcohol-related, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 67 percent. One of the fatalities this year was also drug-related.
