MEDIA RELEASE

A 50-year-old Waimea man apparently drowned Sunday (September 12, 1999) in waters off the Old Kailua Airport Beach in Kailua-Kona.

The victim was identified as Alvin Ulu Kealoha.

Responding to a report of a swimmer in distress, police and fire rescue personnel arrived at the scene, where fire rescue personnel found the victim laying face down in the water about 150 yards offshore. The victim was brought to Kailua Pier, where attempts to revive him failed.

An ambulance took the victim to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m.

Witnesses said they saw Kealoha enter the water for a swim, but he seemed to have some difficulty with the current. They called the 911 emergency number when they saw him unable to return to shore.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
