MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of November 21,2006 – November 27, 2006, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,115 DUI arrests compared with 902 during the same period last year, an increase of 24 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 2,228 major accidents so far this year compared with 2,185 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been 32 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 32 for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
