MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A father and his girlfriend were charged late Thursday (August 24, 2000) in the death of a 9-year-old boy who died of his injuries.

Hilo Criminal Investigation detectives charged Derek Waki, 29, and Kuulei Kane, 30, both of Pahoa, Puna, with second-degree murder in the death of the boy, Derek Waki Jr. The suspects are being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $50,000 bail each.

The father had been arrested for assault early Wednesday after police arrived at the family residence in Pahoa, Puna, and determined that the victim’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

The officers had responded to a report of an unresponsive child at a Naele Street address in Pahoa.

The boy had originally been taken to the Hilo Medical Center, but was later flown to Oahu with extremely critical injuries. He died of his injuries at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at the Kapiolani Women’s Center on Oahu.
