A fire of unknown origin destroyed the main lobby and administrative offices of the Waiakea Villas early Tuesday (April 30, 2002).

While conducting a routine patrol about 1:40 a.m. in the area of the Waiakea Villas, located at 400 Hualani Street, South Hilo Patrol officers discovered a large fire in the main lobby and administrative offices.

At about the same time, Hawaii County firefighters received a call about the fire and responded to the scene to find the structure engulfed in flames.

Responding police officers helped evacuate residents from nearby buildings. There were no reported injuries because of the blaze, and the amount of damages has yet to be determined.

Hawaii County fire inspectors have opened an investigation to determine what caused the fire.
