Big Island vice officers confiscated 14,051 marijuana plants ranging in height from seedlings to eight feet during a five-day operation that ended Friday (July 27, 2001).

Big Island vice officers were joined in the operation by personnel from the Honolulu Police Department.

This week’s marijuana sweep — which covered areas of the Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna and Ka’u Districts — was part of the department’s continuing “Counter-Cannabis Field Operation.”

The operation concentrated on the areas of Wainaku, King’s Landing, Kaiwiki, Hakalau, Honomu, Pepeekeo, Keaau, Pahoa, Ainaloa, Hawaiian Acres, Kapoho, Kalapana, Waawaa, Waiohinu, Mark Twain Estates, Mauna Kea Ranch, Paahau, Maulua Gulch, Ninole and Laupahoehoe.

Officers encountered a sharpened spike in a marijuana patch in Hamakua. No other incidents were reported during the eradication operation, and no arrests were made.
