MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo police arrested an escapee from the Hale Nani Correctional Center and charged him with a second escape after he tried to flee the police station Wednesday (November 27, 2002).

The escapee, identified as Douglas Cordeiro Jr., 21, was charged with two counts of escape and one count of driving without a license. He is being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of a total bail of $4,000.

Responding to an anonymous telephone tip Wednesday afternoon, a South Hilo patrol officer stopped Cordeiro driving a green van on Nene Street. Cordeiro gave a false identification to the officer, who arrested him for driving without a license.

Cordeiro was taken to the police station, where police determined his real identity. While at the station, Cordeiro tried to escape police custody at 4:45 p.m., but was quickly apprehended at the police complex.

Police then charged him with the second escape in addition to the escape from Hale Nani on Sunday and driving without a license.
