MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

A 9-year-old boy who was flown to Oahu with extremely critical injuries died Wednesday (August 23, 2000) at the Kapiolani Women’s Center.

The boy was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m.

The father of the boy had been arrested for assault after police arrived at the family residence in Pahoa, Puna, and determined that the victim’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

The officers had responded to an 11:30 p.m. call Tuesday of an unresponsive child at the Naele Street address.

The case has been reclassified from an assault to a manslaughter, and the father is being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation by Hilo Criminal Investigation Section Detectives.
